Heat Reuse designs, metrics, market - Creation of workstream [EXT]

Don Mitchell

Heat reuse is gaining momentum in regions that are cool, have district heating infrastructure, motivated by sustainability

Northern EMEA has all three.  China is also advancing in these areas,

USA generally is warmer or does not have district heating type applications near data centers

Agricultural applications are also common, but rather superficial in many ways (growing bananas in Norway is not really a promotion of sustainability).

Increasing the quality of heat (higher temperature liquid) broadens application options beyond cold climate agriculture and district heating

30 C waste heat is almost useless outside of cold climates, but 60C waste heat liquid has many applications

Input from Intel is needed to validate whether 60C waste heat makes sense

Cloud&Heat is an example of edge data centers providing utility that can be applied almost anywhere https://www.cloudandheat.com

Key goal is promotion of vision to drive development of solutions that are cost effective and efficient.

Open to correction and insights

·       Coordination of efforts in OCP and external to OCP seeking to advance energy reuse metrics

Action Request

  • creation of workstream or wiki page/collaboration site to update with progress in these areas
  • Notification of organizations involved in sustainability metric development applicable to data centers

Energy Reuse is a key factor in data center sustainability.  Enablement of Energy Reuse is a key potential benefit of increased use of liquids in data center operation.

Advancement of Energy Reuse applications requires market awareness, data center design, metric evolution

  • Market awareness – happening in EMEA, APAC now, creeping slowly into North America
  • Data Center Design – ACF will be progressing in this area, most likely in 2021
  • Metric evolution – Metrics are essential in acceleration of awareness, incentives and mandates.  PUE is the most widely known metric of data center efficiency, but is well known to lack alignment with liquid cooling and energy reuse.  TheGreenGrid is seeking to evolve PUE, but no longer has legal right to make changes without permission

Maciek

Great example of an application that could likely contribute productive heat reuse in a broad spectrum of environments.

Codes, standards, metrics & incentives would make this more likely in other regions.

Have been told that not every immersion cooled application prospers at 70C however, so an understanding of trade-offs is essential

Hi all,

I am very interested in that topic.

Regarding adoption, we may avoid talking about direct heat reuse, as the water outlet temperature is not always stable. To avoid facility management to pushback, we might advise to use the same strategy as the Swedish public hot water loop and install a heat pump between the DC water loop and the facility hot water loop.

The heat pump will have a COP of 6 to 8 and will act as a regulator of the facility water temp. Anytime I saw colleagues advocating for direct heat reuse, we saw pushback from facility management.

Also, we should not advocate on “running dummy code” to heat the system (I really saw people using that…) as the COP of a CPU is 1… regulation by the CPU load is not a sustainable strategy.

Last but not least, the facility management investment is a 10 to 25y CAPEX, while IT is a 3 to 7y. the heat pump will ensure the hot water loop and the DC loop will remain compatible.

If you look at Facility (DC) projections on CPU density, you will see that they  never ever planned 200W CPU. So, whoever can forecast rack density and temperatures 20y ahead is a genius.

My 2 (or maybe 3) cts.

François.

Message goal –

·       Coordination of organizations in OCP and external to OCP seeking to address sustainability metrics

·       Coordination of efforts in OCP and external to OCP seeking to advance energy reuse metrics

Action Request

  • creation of workstream or wiki page/collaboration site to update with progress in these areas
  • Notification of organizations involved in sustainability metric development applicable to data centers

Sustainability is rapidly becoming the top issue for the data center industry, many are working on development of better methods of measuring sustainability.

Archibald, Matthew

On the back of what Francois stated, the CDU should be regulating the fluid flow and temperature on both the primary (FWS) and secondary (TCS) loops.

On the primary side, the flow can be controlled to get a more consistent primary return temperature while still maintaining tight operating conditions for the secondary loop.  One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is with dynamic flow on the primary, and CDUs with lower and constant approach temperature support across the operating range.
