DC-SCM 2.0 LTPI - Redundant Physical Interface Overhead

grant@...

Edited

Hi there,

Hoping this is the right place to submit DC-SCM 2.0/LTPI topics as I'm new to the effort.  I have three requests I'm hoping to get some comment and feedback on.

1.  I saw a comment in last months minutes that LTPI may move to its own spec.  I agree with/support this recommendation!  I think there may be interest in serialized peripheral communication solutions in server applications that are outside of the module usage.

2.  I wanted to share some requirements and request some further consideration on the use of both a source synchronous interfaces as well as 8b10b encoding with LTPI.

Important requirements I'm hearing for FPGA to FPGA and serialized peripheral interface communication.

  • Low latency
  • Low pin count

Board to board communication can easily and commonly be accomplished via source synchronous interfaces without encoding (no need for encoding if you're sharing a clock).

  • E.g - MIPI D-PHY, LVDS, proprietary source synchronous camera and display interfaces, SPI, etc.

Clock encoding is typically only used when you can't rely on consistent inter-pair skew and/or want to reduce the IO count.

  • E.g - HDMI, eDP/DP, proprietary embedded clock interfaces for cameras and displays, Vx1, almost any interface driving through a cable, etc.

In the case of LTPI, 20% throughput overhead and >20% latency is added with embedding the clock, yet we're still sending the clock.  In the specification it mentions it's because of AC-Coupling, but this would not affect using a source synchronous interface and if it did then the sending the clock between devices would not have value.

3.  In addition to #2, there is no need to provide a clock pair in both directions.  Most FPGAs/CPLDs that are able to implement the currently proposed LTPI spec have the ability to deserialize high speed data based on both an internal high speed PLL clock output as well as an incoming high speed clock IOB.  The current LTPI uses a PLL on both sides to generate the same clock and pass between the two PHYs.  This un-necessarily burns two extra IO and at least one PLL.  The only benefit here would be that you may not have to phase align the side generating the clock, but that's only likely due to the low data rate; with the AC coupling choice you still may need to do some static alignment anyways if there is any induced skew.

Hope it helps and I can assist more in this area.  I think there is interest in a specification for this, but I feel that unless these fundamental items are considered prior to a v1.0 release it will hinder adoption.

NC-SI and DC-SCM v2

Steve Roberts

A design team considering DC-SCM approached me about the NC-SI interface on the v2.0 specification.

The net of the conversation is that they require connectivity to two LANs.  I appreciate the advice received from the workgroup call that pointed out the support for a multi-drop bus of up to 5 connections.  While this is architecturally ok per the DSP0222 3 Date: 2009-07-21 4 Version: 1.0.0 standard, multi-drop has been problematic to the point of my design teams requiring two LANs to connect with the two ports on the ASPEED device.  These pins are expensive so ASPEED's choice of having NC-SI is somewhat of a telltale sign.  The 2 port requirement is also echoed on our Interface Survey by the IBM, Arm, Ampere (dual node), and HPE reponses.

To refine problematic:

1) difficult to manage fail over because you don't necessary know which you're talking to or how to disable a LAN with an active link that is active
2) coordination situations as the first device will always get the TX
3) indeterminate fail state behavior between different ethernet control vendors
4) the robustness of linux driver

spec link for reference:
https://www.dmtf.org/sites/default/files/standards/documents/DSP0222_1.0.0.pdf

This is an expensive interface in terms of pin count, so I'm attempting to garner some support and attention to see if perhaps there are upstream solutions that will help these problems or if the systems reps have given this full consideration.

Hi William,

Got you. Unfortunately I don’t have this info. Maybe someone else in the forum does.

Lior,

Thank you for your response. I am referring to the sheet metal bracket, not the board connector. In the spec, the part is referenced as “Full Height SCM Bracket T = 0.8”. This is the part that I would like more information on, ideally a CAD model. Can this be a standard sheet metal PCIe bracket? Is there another standard shaped bracket being used?

It’s very difficult to determine what these measurements are referring to. 0.63mm is the distance between the top of the PCB and what? 3.3mm is the distance between the bracket edge and…what?

Thanks,

Will

I hope this is the right place to ask a question, I am new to the groups.io page. I am interested in a higher resolution drawing spec of the VFF DC-SCM in order to properly place the standard PCIe bracket. The images on Page 13 of the spec have very poor resolution and it’s hard to interpret the edges being measure. Can someone provide an easier to read drawing or a VFF CAD model with PCIe bracket?

Hi everyone!

This is really good timing.  A couple of procedural topics:
  • We want to review the DC-SCM specification in the HW Management Module sub-group.  I can work with Priya to upload to our twiki space for review.
  • The HW Management Module sub-group is under the HW Management project, with Hemal and Bob Steven as leads.
  • Our next meeting invite will be sent out to OCP-DC-SCM and OCP-HWMgt-Module email alias. Targeting mid December. After this we will plan to deprecate the OCP-DC-SCM alias and merge to OCP-HWmgt-Module alias.  Please use the latter!
Let's plan the mid-December meeting to cover spec!

Thanks,
Eric

Too bad the spec is linked to the wrong document in the Wiki!
It's currently setup to the M.2 spec that lists an entry below it.

Hi All

I have a question about the DC-SCM module design.

Putting BMC sub-system and RoT on DC-SCM is a good idea for modular design.

But do we have concern about someone may replace the DC-SCM module and try to get useful information from the server?

Thank you in advance.

Hi All

I have a question about the DC-SCM module design.

Putting BMC sub-system and RoT on DC-SCM is a good idea for modular design.

But do we have concern about someone may replace the DC-SCM moduleand try to get useful information from the server?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Xinbing

Meetings?

Steve Roberts

Hi!

The reference design information on the web has caught my attention.  There are a few design questions I'm interested in like:

a) will there be multiple classes of DC-SCI spec compliant connectors that might enable more compat foot prints?
b) what is the vision for realizing the CPLD and the RoT?

Is there a sub project meeting cadence?
