Facebook Presentation - Hardware Utilization Efficiency (HUE) Metric

mark.dansie@...

Hi DCF Community,

Just in case you missed it there was a really interesting presentation made by Facebook during the recent Sustainability Initiative Metrics call, to socialise their work to create a new metric called Hardware Utilization Efficiency (HUE).

The recording of the presentation can be accessed here https://youtu.be/JBnQ5KfzPEU  starting at 6:56 minutes in.

Both Anthony Chan https://www.linkedin.com/in/anthony-chan-38456a46 and Jayati Athavale https://www.linkedin.com/in/jayati-athavale-48ab3755  fb who presented this, are interested in getting your feedback.

They will also be giving a presentation about HUE during the OCP Summit on November 10, 1:10pm – 1:20pm.

Kind regards,

Webinar - Overview of DMTF's Redfish 2021.2 release

John Leung

DMTF has released its Redfish 2021.2 update, and is hosting a free one-hour review of its contents (Zoom webinar, on October 6th at 8:00 a.m. PT)

The Forum chairs will present the contents of the release. The new release includes the:

  • OAuth 2.0 Authorization Framework allowing for authorization to be performed by an external entity – no usernames or passwords need to be provided by the client.
  • Model extensions to support SmartNICs use cases including as a firewall, offload processors dedicated to the networking function, or as a SoC
  • Key provisioning via Redfish added to support NVMe-oF boot use cases where UEFI and the OS need key information to connect to remote NVMe-oF targets.

These latest enhancements were driven by the growth of Redfish and interoperability feedback received from implementers. A more details on 2021.2, see https://www.dmtf.org/content/redfish-release-20212-now-available

Following the webinar portion, logistics will be provided to join a Q&A session and discussion immediately following. For questions regarding the webinar, email: webinars@.... To register - Register

Thanks Joey,

In the OCP Security project, mandatory requirements have been met with pushback, particularly when long lead times (~3 years) are involved to develop and certify hardware.   There are multiple competing positions:

  1. Mandatory requirements improve the overall industry, but discourage some vendors from participating at all.
  2. Public information-gathering checklists (as we have now) are helpful to purchasers, but may expose suppliers' shortcomings and / or  confidential product plans.
  3. Information-gathering checklists are very helpful guides for purchasers, but they need not be public.  Purchasers are on their own to collect the information from suppliers, e.g., under a non-disclosure agreement.

As you might guess, with three options, and even more opinions, it's hard to reach consensus.

Please keep us (the Security Project) posted!  Let us know if you want to give an update in one of our Tuesday calls, 11:30am ET.

Re: plans for security

Hi Elaine

Have a mix of a few answers. We have two workstreams that will both be information in nature and a 3rd that will we are exploring what applying having it as part of the OCP Ready Spec will look like. This workstream is specifically around logging and monitoring for these networks. In addition to the OCP ready spec we are in the early stages of partnering with other groups such ISA, OPC-UA & Redfish to better define and drive adoption of the specifications.

Hello DCF folks,

As your sub-projects in security progress, will your ultimate goal be compliance or informational?  For example, when your security work is done, published, and approved by the Incubation Committee, will OCP-Ready data centers have to comply with new requirements around security?  Or, will the result of your work be a white paper advising data centers on best practices?  Or, something else.  .  .?

Thanks.

Elaine

Dear Rolf Brink, Don Mitchell and coolant manufacturers,

I want to ask you one question on how to maintain the quality and performance of coolant for a long time. If you already have an answer, I would be very grateful if you could guide me.

In the case of liquid cooling, it is very important to prevent the quality of the coolant from external moisture or contamination. When you talk about the 10-15 year lifespan you are talking about, please give your opinion on how to maintain the quality of coolant.

Stay safe and wish all nice summer vacation.

Thanks,

JB KIM

Dear Rolf Brink, Don Mitchell and coolant manufacturers,

I want to ask you one question on how to maintain the quality and performance of coolant for a long time. If you already have an answer, I would be very grateful if you could guide me.

In the case of liquid cooling, it is very important to prevent the quality of the coolant from external moisture or contamination. When you talk about the 10-15 year lifespan you are talking about, please give your opinion on how to maintain the quality of coolant.

Stay safe and wish all nice summer vacation.

Thanks,

JB KIM
