OCP Workshop: Data Center NVMe SSD and EDSFF

Kali Burdette

Mockups (3).png
Join us Tuesday, April 27 for the OCP Workshop: Data Center NVMe SSD and EDSFF at 9am PT.

EDSFF is a family of form factors designed from the ground up for data center SSDs. Data center NVMe SSD was started by Facebook and Microsoft collaborating on the years of learning from deploying flash at scale and contributing into an open source SSD specification. The specification details exactly how to build the SSDs that these companies source - come learn about how this is being adopted by hyperscale data centers and enterprise. The SSD companies will be showing off new products around these specifications, and independent testing and validation companies will share details about how they are helping to harden the ecosystem for interoperability and quality for these new specs.

led by Jordan Tse (FB),  John Laban (OCP), Bill Carter (OCP)

Mission: To identify key elements in system and component design on HW side and SW side (where applicable) that can improve re-usability at the highest level of consumption aka re-usability of a rack level system prefered over sub-rack systems over piece part systems (component level).

The primary mission of this workstream is to identify industry best practices that can be deployed across vendors, suppliers as well as end user behavior that promotes re-usability and circularity. Primary focus of the group is to solve circularity from a technical and operational point of view.

WORKSTREAM #2: LIFECYCLE OF SYSTEMS/COMPONENTS
led by John Miranda (Intel) and Fahmida Bangert (ITRenew)
Mission: To define methods for assessing environmental impact associated with the key stages of the life cycle of a certified open compute project components, systems and devices. The goal of these methods is to publish metrics and the methodology that are relevant for the OCP community to improve design, development and deployment of sustainable data center infrastructure that strives to reduce carbon footprint with every new generation.

EDGE COMPUTING WORLD CONFERENCE EUROPE

Michael Schill

OCP's Rob Coyle (Project Lead for Data Center Facility Project) and Mike Moore (Project Lead for Edge Project) are hosting a roundtable discussion on March 10th. The topic is around the contributions from our Data Center Facility Project, specifically the Modular Data Center Subgroup and its applicability to the Edge. We encourage you to join us in this discussion in defining the "edge" and what kinds of form factors are needed to address this space. We want to bring the concept of "open" to this market and figure out what challenges lie ahead as OCP Community builds out the Edge.

OCP Integrated Solutions Survey - Please Provide Your Input. All responses are anonymous.

Michael Schill

OCP is looking to better understand the community's views regarding Integrated Solutions. An integrated solution is considered a rack of any size, which in turn has any one or all of compute, network and storage devices, fully wired, pre-configured and fully integrated with a stack of different software solutions to run certain types of workloads suitable for different verticals.

Assumptions:
- Please consider answering these questions from an end user perspective.
- Integrated solutions are a convergence of compute, storage, and networking infrastructure in the data center.
- These questions refer to private cloud or hybrid cloud scenarios.
All responses will be kept anonymous.

For questions about OCP's Integrated Solutions program please contact Steve Helvie.

New OCP Sub-Project is here: Data Center Facility - Operation Technology Security

Archna Haylock

hello OCP Community!

We would like to announce the creation of the Data Center Facilities Operation Technology Security Sub-Project or DCF-OTS through the Open Compute Project (OCP). The  Industrial Control Systems (ICS) that run our data centers are frequently designed with availability as the focus rather than mitigation of security risk or vulnerability. This has presented a unique security challenge across multiple industries from manufacturing to datacenters. We find this type of equipment is often lacking security fundamentals. Security fundamentals such as modern communication, authentication and authorization mechanisms that we would expect in critical equipment attached to a network are often missing.

This Sub-Project will be led by Joey Arato (Facebook) and Jon Littel (Google).

Project Scope and Goals
Security issues with this type of equipment are not unique to data centers but are present in multiple industries such as manufacturing and energy. By combining efforts across multiple organizations and industries we can begin to drive a marked increase in the security of these systems and environments. The project's scope is focused on communications, authentication, monitoring and management.
To start we are focusing on what a baseline physical security standard would look like for a data center, what types of communications standards and protocols would best enable secure comms of this equipment and how we best monitor it for security issues.

We will be initiating 3 different workstreams:
  • Construction Security - led by Marcello Campos (Roxtec)
  • Monitoring and Logging - led by Eehern Wong (Google)
  • Communications - led by Steve Scott (Facebook)

OCP Telco & Edge Project Survey - Where shall we go next?

Michael Schill

The purpose of this survey is to poll the OCP community and those that would like to participate outside our community and see what types of markets and areas are of interest. The Telco And Edge Project Communities have their current charter in place, but we are always striving to improve and explore.

Are there market segments that we are missing, are there gaps that are not being addressed in the open source communities, are there challenges that carriers, suppliers and providers are facing that we should explore?? These are the questions we are asking and seeking some input on!  Please take a moment and help us figure out where to go next!

This survey will remain active until March 1st, 2021.

I hope that everyone is able to attend.

Sincerely,
