All,

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a good holiday season.

On Wednesday, we have our first OCP- Modular Data Center meeting for 2021.  One of our biggest goals is to reset our agenda for the year beginning with actions to develop a MDC OCP-ready specification.  This would also include expansion of the existing specification for a wider power range and more cooling options.

I hope that everyone is able to attend.

Sincerely,

Bob Oliver

January 6, 2021

Agenda:

  • Specification review of 2.0
  • Review input from call to action on Specification
  • Update on Site Assessment

December 2, 2020

Meeting Notes:

  • Consider creating a blog to show plans for MDC
  • No plan to change the meeting time.
  • Specification Review:
    • Create a 2.0 version of the existing 90kW specification that would include:
      • Broader power range (up to 150kW)
      • More options for traditional cooling (including heat reuse that would satisfy California Title 24 requirements - being done by Cloud & Heat today https://www.cloudandheat.com
      • Compatible with OCP ready requirements
      • Scott Neal, Bob Oliver, and Philippe Boisvert to develop a proposal.
    • Create a high density option
      • Focus on liquid cooling
      • Power range and rack power TBD based on cooling.
    • Call to action needed for broader input
  • Request that Karl Rabe provide an update on Site Assessment including planned presentation - will be posted on the Wiki.

Agenda:

  • Meeting Time
    • No feedback on time change - will not adjust for now.

OCP new incubation Sub-Project: Advanced Cooling Facilities is launched!!

Archna Haylock

OCP is launching a new incubation Sub-Project under our Data Center Facilities Project! The Advanced Cooling Facilities (ACF) Sub-Project will be collaborating on the integration of Advanced Cooling Solutions (ACS) into Data Center Facilities (DCF) via liquid distribution.  Participants of the ACF Sub-Project community will endeavor to develop solutions, seek guidance and create reference designs that enable ACS deployment in both new and existing data centers, with a special focus on OCP Ready™ data centers.

Primary interests in the Advanced Cooling Facilities Sub-Project community include:

  • Minimizing risk, time and operational impact related to installation of ACS liquid solutions
  • Collaborating on and simplifying guidance for scalability of liquid cooled ACS solutions over the life of the data center
  • Optimizing energy efficiency and reuse potential of data centers via liquid cooled ACS solutions

To get involved:

1) Please become an OCP member and join the ACF Mailing List

2) Get familiar with the details on the Sub-Project on the ACF Wiki

3) Participate in our first call on Aug 4th at 8am PT/11am ET. Check our Project Calendar for more info. Call Info and agenda will be published via the mailing list reflector.

All,
You are invited to attend the very first meeting of the OCP TAP Community! Details below!!

What is TAP?
Time is a key element to get the highest efficiency in a distributed system. The performance of a distributed system depends on the synchronization of its elements. Several industries such as telecom, mobile, power, industrial, professional audio and video and many more have embraced the need for highly accurate and more importantly reliable distribution and synchronization of time and frequency across packet networks. Although the use case scenario for each of the industries is different, they all share one common thing and that is, time synchronization. Since there is a diverse need for time synchronization across different industries, driven from different use cases and applications, managing the needs of this industry chain becomes a challenge.

Time Appliances Project (TAP) aims to provide a platform to bring together, discuss, standardize and share technologies and solutions across industries with the datacenter applications and datacenter network infrastructure as the main interest. The project aims to bring together the community of datacenter operators, application developers, and equipment and semiconductor companies together to enable datacenter time-sensitive applications such as consistency in distributed systems, edge computing, AR/VR and IoT. These applications will greatly benefit from high accuracy, reliable, and scalable distribution and synchronization of time.

IEEE 1588 Precision Timing Protocol (PTP) and other synchronization methods have been adopted by various industries to maximize the efficiency of various distributed system use cases. Each use case scenario comes with a set of requirements and configurations. These configurations are collected as a ‘PTP profile’. Time appliances project aims to support the development of a PTP profile for datacenter applications and datacenter network infrastructure. The profile will cover time-sensitive applications over OCP-compliant and PTP-aware networking infrastructure such as network switches, network clocks, network interface cards, timing modules & connectors, etc. Additionally, the profile will address various requirements for high accuracy and reliable distribution and synchronization of time, such as expected performance, networking, software API, data models, deployment and telemetry. The project also aims at openness and interoperability through the use of open-source PTP software implementations for timing appliances.

Datacenter applications are the primary target of time appliances project. In addition, the project extends to related topics on time synchronization in academia, research and other industries. The time appliances project brings together the community and will be highly collaborative through technical meetings and collaboration with other OCP Projects including the Networking, Storage, Server, and Telco Projects.

Hi Peter,

I think you mean the Distributed Disaggregated Core, right?  I don’t want to assume that is the only DDC….but if that is the right one that the Telco group has that.

Subject: [OCP-All] OCP Project Lead Election News!

OCP’s Project community is run by volunteers and we are always grateful to those that have spent their valuable time and energy to make our community a success.  Some of these Project Leaderships have grown a small incubation concept to solutions that involve multiple work streams and have garnered support from multiple companies.  Some have grown their community from a few engineers to hundreds of engineers on one call. This type of collaboration requires months of effort and patience but also a passion for teamwork and open solutions. We want to thank all those that have helped OCP become the go-to place for collaboration and open hardware/embedded software solutions. We appreciate all those leaders that are moving on to different roles and sincerely hope that our paths will cross again.

For the first time in the history of OCP, we are very excited to announce that there will be no elections for our Project Leads. We sent out a "Call for Nominations" for candidates on June 12th. What followed over the course of the past two weeks has been a stunning display for collaboration and teamwork.  Here are our Volunteer Leaders for Project and SubProjects - all running uncontested by unanimous demand. Please join me in welcoming and congratulating this amazing team of volunteers at OCP! These are effective Aug 1st after a brief transition period.

If there are any questions, please feel free to reach out.
