OCP’s Project community is run by volunteers and we are always grateful to those that have spent their valuable time and energy to make our community a success.  Some of these Project Leaderships have grown a small incubation concept to solutions that involve multiple work streams and have garnered support from multiple companies.  Some have grown their community from a few engineers to hundreds of engineers on one call. This type of collaboration requires months of effort and patience but also a passion for teamwork and open solutions. We want to thank all those that have helped OCP become the go-to place for collaboration and open hardware/embedded software solutions. We appreciate all those leaders that are moving on to different roles and sincerely hope that our paths will cross again.

 

For the first time in the history of OCP, we are very excited to announce that there will be no elections for our Project Leads. We sent out a "Call for Nominations" for candidates on June 12th. What followed over the course of the past two weeks has been a stunning display for collaboration and teamwork.  Here are our Volunteer Leaders for Project and SubProjects - all running uncontested by unanimous demand. Please join me in welcoming and congratulating this amazing team of volunteers at OCP! These are effective Aug 1st after a brief transition period.

  • Facilitate discussions, both online and in-person, that empower and encourage project participants to communicate, collaborate, and contribute to OCP in an open and transparent manner.

  • Support the direction of the Foundation by effectively communicating those goals to their projects through the OCP mailing lists, monthly calls, OCP events and various other tools.

  • Drive communication between their projects and the Foundation;

  • Work closely with the Foundation to grow the reach of their respective projects and that of the OCP ecosystem;

  • Focus on the needs of the project participants, the project goals, and the OCP Foundation’s goals and philosophies. In addition the Project Leads must be able to infuse their project with the following traits:

  • strong community leadership

  • world wide collaboration

  • inclusive vs exclusive approach

  • technical excellence

  • focus on innovation 

Term:

 2 years:  August 2020  - July 2022


Eligibility:

  • Nominees must belong to an OCP Tiered Member organization. 


  • OCP Community Level Member nominees are eligible to run if that organization has made a contribution to OCP within the last membership period (subject to approval by OCP staff).


Nominations:

  • performance/efficiency vs chip temperature

Don and Steve very good points,

Heat recovery and sustainablity is our focus since I founded Cloud&Heat in 2011. We have 19 locations with servers with heat recovery, most of them for heating purposes of adjacent buildings. The original idea was that this makes particular sense for decentralized edge data centers in urban areas and cities.

We found that the key is to achive high temperatures in water of 60°C (140F) and beyond to get the transistion from waste head to a valuable resource. This requires quite careful heat exchanger design and flow rate control.

However we also found that the optimum temperature for chips and CPU largly varies on the internal structure and semiconductor properties like leakage current vs. low voltage operation.

One of our anchor projects is a datacenter in the heart of the financial district of the city of Frankfurt. We completely refurbished the former European Central Bank data center into a complete water cooled data center providing warm water to the skyscraper heating infrastructure. The NREL data center is very efficient. However, when looking at heat recovery, you have to balance the extra power required at higher CPU temperature with the cost of efficient heat pumps. (a one to one comparison of watts of heat to watts of computer power is not appropriate) A hotter running processor may require 5% more power and a typical heat pump has a COP of 4.

This means that if you run your 100 watt processor hotter so it uses 105 watts to get usable heat, and the heat your are replacing requires 25 watts of power to produce 100 watts of heat, the 20 watt power savings for a 100 watts of heat may not justify the expense of hooking the computer to the heating system.

Also, once you hook up a heat source that you can't control to a heating system, you need to have a backup source of heat.

I generally agree with the conclusions Cloud&Heat reached in its white paper on heat recovery, but why use a cold plate when rack-based single-phase immersion is more cost effective and energy efficient?  NREL studied LiquidCool Solutions technology for two years and concluded that it is the Gold Standard for cooling data centers.

Don and Steve very good points,

Heat recovery and sustainablity is our focus since I founded Cloud&Heat in 2011. We have 19 locations with servers with heat recovery, most of them for heating purposes of adjacent buildings. The original idea was that this makes particular sense for decentralized edge data centers in urban areas and cities.

We found that the key is to achive high temperatures in water of 60°C (140F) and beyond to get the transistion from waste head to a valuable resource. This requires quite careful heat exchanger design and flow rate control.

However we also found that the optimum temperature for chips and CPU largly varies on the internal structure and semiconductor properties like leakage current vs. low voltage operation.

One of our anchor projects is a datacenter in the heart of the financial district of the city of Frankfurt. We completely refurbished the former European Central Bank data center into a complete water cooled data center providing warm water to the skyscraper heating infrastructure. The NREL data center is very efficient. However, when looking at heat recovery, you have to balance the extra power required at higher CPU temperature with the cost of efficient heat pumps. (a one to one comparison of watts of heat to watts of computer power is not appropriate) A hotter running processor may require 5% more power and a typical heat pump has a COP of 4.

This means that if you run your 100 watt processor hotter so it uses 105 watts to get usable heat, and the heat your are replacing requires 25 watts of power to produce 100 watts of heat, the 20 watt power savings for a 100 watts of heat may not justify the expense of hooking the computer to the heating system.

Also, once you hook up a heat source that you can't control to a heating system, you need to have a backup source of heat.

  • summary of EMEA (and global) programs incentivizing  energy reuse (by mandate or incentive)

Don and Steve very good points,

Heat recovery and sustainablity is our focus since I founded Cloud&Heat in 2011. We have 19 locations with servers with heat recovery, most of them for heating purposes of adjacent buildings. The original idea was that this makes particular sense for decentralized edge data centers in urban areas and cities.

We found that the key is to achive high temperatures in water of 60°C (140F) and beyond to get the transistion from waste head to a valuable resource. This requires quite careful heat exchanger design and flow rate control.

However we also found that the optimum temperature for chips and CPU largly varies on the internal structure and semiconductor properties like leakage current vs. low voltage operation.

One of our anchor projects is a datacenter in the heart of the financial district of the city of Frankfurt. We completely refurbished the former European Central Bank data center into a complete water cooled data center providing warm water to the skyscraper heating infrastructure. The NREL data center is very efficient. However, when looking at heat recovery, you have to balance the extra power required at higher CPU temperature with the cost of efficient heat pumps. (a one to one comparison of watts of heat to watts of computer power is not appropriate) A hotter running processor may require 5% more power and a typical heat pump has a COP of 4.

This means that if you run your 100 watt processor hotter so it uses 105 watts to get usable heat, and the heat your are replacing requires 25 watts of power to produce 100 watts of heat, the 20 watt power savings for a 100 watts of heat may not justify the expense of hooking the computer to the heating system.

Also, once you hook up a heat source that you can't control to a heating system, you need to have a backup source of heat.

I don't think it makes sense for San Diego, but it might for a place where heat is expensive and the computers are running at full load all of the time.

The NREL data center is very efficient. However, when looking at heat recovery, you have to balance the extra power required at higher CPU temperature with the cost of efficient heat pumps. (a one to one comparison of watts of heat to watts of computer power is not appropriate) A hotter running processor may require 5% more power and a typical heat pump has a COP of 4.

This means that if you run your 100 watt processor hotter so it uses 105 watts to get usable heat, and the heat your are replacing requires 25 watts of power to produce 100 watts of heat, the 20 watt power savings for a 100 watts of heat may not justify the expense of hooking the computer to the heating system.

Also, once you hook up a heat source that you can't control to a heating system, you need to have a backup source of heat.

I don't think it makes sense for San Diego, but it might for a place where heat is expensive and the computers are running at full load all of the time.

Steve – some great points.  Wish I had the data to help understand them better.

 

Finding reliable, current data on CPU temperature vs performance is a challenge. 

  • Air cooled IT vs liquid cooled IT – extremely different in heat transfer methodologies and temperature stability.   60C with air cooled chips will be a different study than 60C liquid cooled chips
  • Age of study – many studies date back to 2014 – few industries have changed more in 7 years than IT chips
  • Applications
    • many studies target gamers, miners….need for speed with minimal interest in efficiency. 
    • Edge vs Hyperscale – Look at Cloud & Heat, CoolDC.  While San Diego may not benefit from large sources of waste heat, smaller liquid cooled “Edge” applications may be practical, especially at higher temperatures.
  • Heat reuse form factor – most applications for heat reuse (besides hot house and agriculture) require liquid transportation of heat.  So 35C air becomes 30C liquid in Stockholm before it goes into heatpumps.  45F-60F liquid is a resource in most of the world – what is the true cost of that resource

 

Request – Would greatly appreciate any links to studies that are less than 2 years old, looking at liquid cooled chip performance. 

Laws of physics and heat transfer don’t change.  “Moores Law” and chip design do change.

Hi Steve,

 

Leakage current on package only appears if the CPU runs at more than 65°C. This happens very frequently in air cooled environment, when we see CPU at up to 90°C (package temperature). DLC and Immersion allow an inlet temperature between 35 and 45 (depending on technology and “side cooling” for hybrid cooling systems), and will allow heat recovery, without facing leakage current on package.

 

I think your message was  to say that, to get water at 65°C (for reuse), it is better to get the water out of the IT at around 50°C, and use a heat pump. The heat pump with inlet at 45°C will have a COP of 4 (up to 6, in some cases) while the CPU has a COP of 1 (or even below 1 if you calculate it the same way you do for a heat pump).

 

BTW, looking at real cases, a heat pump is usually required to regulate the temperature entering the reuse system, if you want to inter-operate with standard building heating or hot water systems that are already in place. Cases that go direct from IT water to facility hot water (NREL, LRZ, etc.) look like ‘home-made’ with a lot of adaptations just not to use a heat pump. I agree that connecting the outlet to a heat pump will be the most efficient long-term investment.

Our data center in Charlotte, NC is the only OCP-Ready™ colocation data center, and uses passive cooling with integrated adiabatic media through our proprietary WindChill™ Enclosure (https://www.gigadatacenters.com/modular-data-center-technology/). We guarantee a PUE of 1.15 or better, and currently are running at 1.10. Without the cost of raised-floor, chilled-water systems, and their associated maintenance costs, it not only reduced the capital expense to build the facility by 50%, but we also save on the reduced operating and maintenance expense. We can achieve a 25-degree (F) Delta-T, and maintain the ASHRAE TC9.9 Recommended Guidelines for temp & humidity even if the rack power density ranges within the WindChill from 4kW per rack up to 50kW. This has been a great savings for customers looking to deploy HPC or hyperconverged systems needing more power, and yet have enough RU to fill the unit before they run out of power allocation. Cold-aisle with positive pressure via fan-wall, and Hot-aisle isolation with negative pressure moves the heat effectively out of the servers & IT equipment.

The NREL data center is very efficient. However, when looking at heat recovery, you have to balance the extra power required at higher CPU temperature with the cost of efficient heat pumps. (a one to one comparison of watts of heat to watts of computer power is not appropriate) A hotter running processor may require 5% more power and a typical heat pump has a COP of 4.

This means that if you run your 100 watt processor hotter so it uses 105 watts to get usable heat, and the heat your are replacing requires 25 watts of power to produce 100 watts of heat, the 20 watt power savings for a 100 watts of heat may not justify the expense of hooking the computer to the heating system.

Also, once you hook up a heat source that you can't control to a heating system, you need to have a backup source of heat.

I don't think it makes sense for San Diego, but it might for a place where heat is expensive and the computers are running at full load all of the time.
