Dear Members

The Open Compute Project (OCP) Foundation and Board are pleased to announce  the appointment of Dharmesh Jani (DJ)  as the Incubation Committee (IC) Co-Chair. DJ will be taking over Aaron Sullivan’s role as Co-Chair of the IC. Aaron’s responsibilities at Facebook have evolved to the point that he could no longer devote sufficient time to his IC responsibilities. Aaron will stay involved through the OCP Global Summit next week to ensure a smooth transition.

DJ has been involved with OCP for many years, and has been shadowing Aaron on OCP duties since late last year. DJ brings more than 15 years of experience in the technology industry, starting in technical roles and advancing through technical and product marketing leadership roles, most recently holding the position of VP of Product Management and Technology & Strategic Alliances at Flex. One of DJ’s primary responsibilities at Facebook involves Open Ecosystem engagement and strategy.

We sincerely appreciate Aaron's leadership and guidance, and thank him for his support and his dedication to OCP. When you have a moment, please reach out to Aaron and convey your appreciation.

DJ will be co-chairing the OCP IC with Tom Anschutz from AT&T. We look forward to both of them working together to define the technical future of the OCP Community.

Please join me in welcoming DJ to the OCP Leadership.

Hi Sebastiano,

Thanks for your inquiry. I think participation with the OCP Networking Group and the CBW subgroup makes most sense.

We have been advocating for disaggregation in the networking space since the networking group was started nearly 6 years ago. Now we have a number of examples of both open-source software and commercial software available on top of OCP hardware, including OCP-accepted wifi switches.

Let’s engage over in the networking group, and we can connect in a few weeks at Summit.

Thanks.

Omar

Hello OCP,

we are relatively new in OCP and we are excited to be at OCP in a few days!

We are still trying to understand how to best contribute to OCP and we have been trying to understand the context for a few weeks now. It seems we should cooperate within the NETWORKING-CBW (Campus, Branch Wireless) group, but as we are not 100% confident, please allow us to send this message to present our project and connect before we have a chance face to face.

OUR PROJECT: TANAZAOS

Tanaza is a Milan-based company operating in the Wi-Fi space since 2010. In the past few years, Tanaza decided to embrace the sw/hw disaggregation concept and to bring it to Wi-Fi, conceiving the TanazaOS (os.tanaza.com).

TanazaOS is a Linux-based Operating System that enables communications between wireless access points and a cloud-based unified management layer. It is designed to run both on white-box hardware and off-the-shelf wireless devices from different vendors.

Its goal is to minimize CAPEX and OPEX in Wi-Fi deployments, particularly in large deployments. CAPEX can be minimized thanks to its interoperability: it is designed to work with either the cheapest consumer Wi-Fi router and with performing hardware. OPEX can be minimized thanks to web-scale features and to a rich set of APIs.

The project is currently in pre-launch stage and we are looking for anyone that may have an interest in it within the wider scope of the OCP, including chipset vendors, ODMs, vendors, MSPs, Wi-Fi operators.

TanazaOS is not an Open Source project.

Can anyone confirm that CBW is where we should stay? Is there any plan to create a group for Wi-Fi related closed NOS?

Thanks for your support. We'd like to ensure that we'll meet anyone interested in disaggregated Wi-Fi at OCP.

My Mobile/WhatsApp is +39 328 7189924.

See you soon.

New Open Domain-Specific Architecture sub-project to launch within the OCP Server Project.

Michael Schill

On January 29th, Netronome and the Open Compute Project hosted a workshop at GLOBALFOUNDRIES headquarters in Silicon Valley to share the concept of creating an Open Domain-Specific Architecture targeted for System on a Chip (SoC) designs. Over 70 people attended from over 35 companies including Achronix, AveraSemi, Facebook, Kandou, NXP, TitanIC and zGlue to express their support and interest in this concept, along with a healthy dose of apprehension and skepticism.

Outweighing that skepticism is the potential benefit of breakthrough speed and agility to deliver performance from domain specific hardware accelerators (e.g. networking, security, storage, machine learning and inference silicon) while reducing cost of development and manufacturing.

An Open Domain-Specific Architecture (ODSA) sub-project will be chartered within the Open Compute Project Foundation. This workgroup will define an open interface and architecture that enables the mixing and matching of available silicon die from different suppliers onto a single SoC for data center applications. The goal is to define a process to integrate best-of-breed chiplets onto a SoC.

“The open architecture for domain-specific accelerators being proposed by the ODSA Workgroup brings the benefits of disaggregation to the world of SoCs. The OCP Community led by hyperscale operators has been at the forefront driving disaggregation of server and networking systems. Joining forces with OCP, the ODSA Workgroup brings the next chapter of disaggregation for domain-specific accelerator SoCs as it looks toward enabling proof of concepts and deployable products leveraging OCP’s strong ecosystem of hardware and software developers,” said Sujal Das, chief marketing and strategy officer at Netronome.

Today there are many companies affected by, and affecting SoCs and domain-specific accelerators, such as co-processors for networking, security, storage, machine learning and inferencing. OCP has become the community of choice for collaboration by these companies and the ODSA goals align well with an already strong community of cloud hardware and firmware developers.

“Open hardware standards drive innovation. Achronix believes that the standardization of chiplets will enable companies to develop FPGA-based solutions faster for cost-efficient hardware accelerator products at lower costs. This is why Achronix helped start the ODSA Workgroup, and why we are excited to see this effort gain momentum by becoming part of the OCP,” said Manoj Roge, vice president of strategic planning and business development at Achronix Semiconductor Corporation.

At the upcoming OCP Global Summit, you can hear more about the ODSA project during the workshop:

Open Compute Project Foundation Announces New Board Member Jim Hawkins

Michael Schill

The Open Compute Project Foundation (OCP) announces that Jim Hawkins will serve on its Board of Directors. Jim replaces Brian Stein, who has served for the last year as the Rackspace representative. The OCP Foundation would like to thank Brian for contributing his time and talents to the OCP Community.

The OCP Foundation and Community is effective because our board members, volunteer leadership, and Community members give their time and talents to help promote open solutions; driving innovations forward at a pace that simply could not occur if attempted alone. They lead by example and they lead with passion. The Foundation, the Community, and our many collaboration partners are better together.

Jim joins board members Andy Bechtolsheim, Bill Laing (Microsoft), Joshua Matheus (Goldman Sachs), Jason Waxman (Intel), Rocky Bullock (OCP), and Mark Roenigk (Facebook), serving as Chairman.

“Jim is a great addition to the OCP Board. His experience in scaling mission critical infrastructure in both enterprise and cloud technologies will help shape the future of OCP. We really appreciate the depth of experience that he brings to this role and his ongoing contributions to the success of the Open Compute Project” stated Mark Roenigk, Chairman and President of the Board for the Open Compute Project Foundation.

About Jim Hawkin
s

Jim Hawkins is the vice president of global data center operations and engineering at Rackspace, where he oversees the company’s worldwide network of data centers, hardware engineering, and other critical infrastructure operations.

Jim joined Rackspace in 2008, initially serving as director of operational excellence. Since then, he has held several positions, including director of U.S. data centers and senior director of global data center operations.  Jim has brought a number of strengths to these roles, including a specialized knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodology and operational discipline. While serving in each of his roles at Rackspace, he incorporated his knowledge of these principles into the design and daily operation of Rackspace’s mission critical infrastructure, and has been a proponent of the Open Compute Project since its inception in 2011.

Jim earned his BS in marketing at Westminster College and received his MBA from Purdue University.
